OUR STORY

Our Story

Southern Pines Brewing Company first started as an idea in the spring of 2013.  Micah, John, and Jason were at the mid-point of their military careers as Green Berets in the U.S. Army, and all had served on the same Operational Detachment Alpha Team.  The three had homebrewed some in the past and enjoyed the social atmosphere that homebrewing provided.  After being reassigned to new jobs, they came up with the idea of starting their own business after hearing an investor talk about his ownership in a local, North Carolina craft brewery.  The entrepreneurial spark was ignited, and the three began to develop a plan to open a craft brewery of their own.

“WHILE LIVING IN AN RV OUT OF WHITE LAB’S PARKING LOT, THEY WERE ABLE TO LEARN ABOUT THE MICROBIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY OF BREWING…”

They spent the next year working on their business plan, visiting as many breweries as possible, and increasing their knowledge of how to make beer.  John and Micah took Siebel Institute of Technology’s Concise Course on Brewing Technology, and then travelled out to San Diego to take the Essential Quality Control Course at White Labs.  While living in an RV out of White Lab’s parking lot, they were able to learn about the microbiology and chemistry of brewing from giants in the brewing industry like Chris White and Lyn Kruger.  The training was critical for developing the practices used to start the brewery off on the right foot.  Southern Pines brewed the first batch of beer on their 15 BBL Premier Stainless brewhouse on June 23rd of 2014, one year and two days after officially filing the paperwork to become an LLC.  The taproom opened its doors to the public on September 23rd, 2014, and the business was off.  Southern Pines currently self-distributes beer in central North Carolina, and is excited to further promote the craft beer industry in its local market.  Beyond the production batches of beer that Southern Pines distributes, it is excited to continually brew new, artisanal batches of beer on its small, 2.5 BBL pilot system.  Stop by Southern Pines Brewing Company and enjoy the community atmosphere that craft beer provides!

OUR PEOPLE

Micah Niebauer

MICAH NIEBAUER

Co-founder & CEO

SPBC’s master of the gab, Micah, started homebrewing with Jason and John in his garage. That’s when he also discovered his true love of the science behind the beer making process. His wife couldn’t be more ecstatic about the brewery opening and being able to reclaim some of their home from mountains of brewing supplies. Micah’s Favorite Beer Styles: American Sours and Wilds
John Brumer

JOHN BRUMER

Co-founder & COO

Resident mad scientist, John, was always a fan of craft beer. Then about four years ago he came to the realization that he could make his own brew. So he started homebrewing and the rest is history!  When he’s not brewing IPA’s and Farmhouse Ales, John loves sipping soy chai lattes, climbing Hanging Rock, and mountain biking in the Pisgahs. John’s Favorite Beer Styles: IPA’s, Saisons
Jason Ginos

JASON GINOS

Co-founder and CFO

Jason, aka the master of subtraction, discovered his love for great beer when he started homebrewing with John and Micah about 2 years ago. (Let’s just say it was love at first brew!) When not at the brewery or crunching numbers on Quickbooks, Jason devotes his time to his two crazy kids and hanging out at the Outer Banks. Jason’s Favorite Beer Styles: Scotch Ales, Saisons

FLAGSHIPS

Duck Hook

DUCK HOOK

The Duck Hook is a traditional cream ale that is sure to bring relief from a hot summer day. Brewed with a mix of ale and lager yeast, this truly American-style beer is straw-colored with a creamy head of foam from the large proportion of 6- row barley. It has a mild perceived bitterness, similar in flavor to pilsners due to the addition of Czech Saaz hops. The mouthfeel is dry, with a slightly sweet, corn-like maltiness. The Duck Hook is a refreshing, sessionable beer that goes down smooth and light all day long.(4.3% ABV, 16 IBU, 2.5 SRM)

Man of Law

MAN OF LAW

Man of Law is a citrusy, hop-forward IPA, and the second year-round flagship of SPBC.  It’s clear, amber appearance and creamy head present a well balanced IPA.  The aroma contains strong orange and pineapple notes, with a slight hint of resinous character.  The initial citrusy hop flavor is contrasted with the caramel sweetness of the malt.  The bitterness is pleasantly rounded and free from astringency due to the bittering hops being first-wort additions.  The beer has a clean finish, and at 6.4%, the Man of Law holds true to its name of being a well-rounded IPA that highlights balance over extremes. (6.4% ABV, 60 IBU, 8.8 SRM)

Plowman's Folly

PLOWMAN’S FOLLY

Plowman’s Folly is a French-style Saison Farmhouse Ale with a crisp, white wine characteristic that is refreshing and pleasing to drink. Brewed with a special French strain of yeast, this beer presents more of a citrus character than the pepper and spice of its Belgian companions. The caramel and wheat malts create a noticeably complex taste profile in this golden ale. The aroma contains distinct white wine notes due to the addition of organic Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand, with further “cool climate” white wine flavors strikingly similar to Sauvingon Blanc wines from the Marlborough Region. Its dry, crisp mouthfeel makes this 7.5% ABV beer incredibly easy to drink and enjoy. Plowman’s Folly is one of SPBC’s flagships, and it is truly a unique version of this up and coming craft beer style.(7.5% ABV, 35 IBU, 5.4 SRM)
